More Than a Meal: Mandela Day 2026

Arriving early in the morning to begin prepping the food, Chef Khumo and team were well prepared for the challenge - swapping their fully equipped kitchen and fine dining menu for 200 hungry mouths and enormous cooking pots over an open fire! Ekurhuleni’s cooks worked side by side with our own team, eager to learn from Chef Khumo's expertise as, together, they prepared hearty beef and chicken stew, pap, rice, and vegetables by the vat-full.

By early afternoon, the youngest children began arriving from school – jumping with excitement for the occasion. One-by-one, more learners flooded in until, as if on cue, the atmosphere changed. At the gates, a precession of girls dressed in vibrant skirts and boys waving their ceremonial sticks began marching in single file. In a heartwarming welcome to our team, the children then performed Xibelana and Muchongolo dances to the tune of rhythmic drumming and clapping. The energy was infectious and the air was filled with laughter as the celebrations began in earnest.

As lunchtime approached, Prudence and the Seeds of Light team began rounding up the crowd – and soon neat lines were formed from the smallest Grade R learners right through to the oldest high school students. For many, a hearty meat stew was a special treat in itself. Eyes goggled as each child collected their steaming hot plate, filled to the brim with tasty goodness. Then, when our team began handing out bottles of fizzy drink, arms shot in the air with pure whoops of delight.

Finally, with smiles as big as the full stomachs stretched beneath T-shirts, the children began to wander back to the play area. But, we weren’t finished yet! New lines were formed and, this time, each child got to pick a beautifully crafted cupcake, handmade by GM Talitha and her ‘helper elves’ Matt and Mila. Decorated with buttery icing in different colours, delicate stars, sugary balls, and even edible glitter – they were almost too pretty to eat. Though that didn’t stop several children from sneaking round for a chance at a second helping. Even the centre's own staff were every bit as eager to sample one of the sweet treats. Thankfully, there was plenty to go around.

As the giveaway continued, every child also collected a lolly pop treat and a brand new, fluffy blanket to take home. During winter, the nights can get bitterly cold – especially when many homes have little insulation or even appropriate bedding – so this final gift was something to last and make a difference long after the festivities had ended. With the afternoon coming to an end, Prudence gave one final, rousing speech before the children slowly dispersed, still caught in animated conversations of the day’s events.

For our parting gift, the centre itself received the 200 enamel plate sets to keep, alongside a bag full of footballs to continue bringing smiles and laughter for a long time to come. As we began to pack up and prepare for the journey back to the lodge, there was a feeling of quiet fulfilment in the air.  Many of our team come from the very same communities as the children they had spent the day serving. To be able to give something back – to share their skills, their time, and their laughter – was every bit as meaningful for them as it was for those receiving it.

Mandela Day offered a wonderful reminder that sometimes the simplest acts – like sharing a home-cooked meal around a table – have the greatest ability to bring us together.
